FAULHABER celebrates engineering triumphs and challenges of Philae comet landing

Touchdown! The Rosetta Mission and the Philae lander made space exploration history with the first-ever successful landing on a comet on November 12, 2014. Now that the scientific analysis phase of the mission has begun, FAULHABER drive systems continue to play important roles in the process of discovery and analysis of the composition of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The Rosetta space probe travelled for more than 10 years through outer space. At the end of May, the probe moved into an orbit around the comet in order to map its surface and prepare for the landing of Philae, the mission's landing unit.

With the news of the lander's touchdown, at first there was triumph and euphoria. Then, shortly afterward, one agonizing question: How securely is Philae sitting on Chury?

There is little known about the exact composition of the surface of the comet, and ice, dust, fissures, and craggy structures all eventually factored into the landing. FAULHABER DC motors were designed for the Philae lander unit to help firmly anchor onto the comet. Following the failure of the cold gas engine, the harpoons to anchor Philae to the comet's surface also failed to deploy as planned. These harpoon heads were to be launched by an explosive charge. As a result, the lander bounced three times across the surface of the comet and came to rest in a sideways postion.

The FAULHABER drives that were intended to give Philae a more secure footing on the comet's surface by reeling in and putting tension on the anchor cables were therefore not called into action -- a real shame, because the harpoons formed such an exciting and needed part of the mission.

However, a FAULHABER drive system did provide support during touchdown of the lander by converting kinetic energy into desperately needed electrical energy and finally into thermal energy by means of a spindle drive.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), Philae's miniature laboratory was able to perform science experiments before its main battery power dwindled, and a stream of signals and impressive images has already made its way back to Earth to help investigate the comet. It is unknown whether the lander will, in time, gain access to enough sunlight as it hurtles toward the sun to run more experiments and send back more data.

Other FAULHABER DC motors are used in the instruments and analysis systems on Philae for the scientific study of the comet that began immediately after touchdown. Bore samples are to be analyzed, and the results will be sent to the Rosetta probe and relayed to Earth. These analyses take place under the extreme ambient operating conditions on the comet surface and open space. A total of 14 different FAULHABER drive systems are braving these harsh conditions after the decade-long journey in the vacuum and incredibly low temperatures of space. As a result, valuable insights into the origin and evolution of our solar system will be achieved through the mission.
